What do hidden hyperventilation, indigestion and weight gain all have in common? They are all directly caused by poor breathing. Who knew?! Sniff Sigh Yawn founder, breathing educator and author Joel Jelen explains…
If your breathing is out of kilter and stressed which can often be hidden (mouth and chest breathing is stressed breathing), don’t expect to digest your food properly. A pharmaceutical drug might help you with indigestion but good sustainable ongoing digestion is aided by the rest and digest phenomenon afterwards and before you eat, grounding yourself via the breath ready for digestion.
Even less well acknowledged by media and the general public, but scientific evidence firmly backs this, breathing less than optimally can cause carb craving. The phenomenon known as ‘anaerobic respiration’ involves loading yourself with carbs to replace the oxygen you don’t gain for energy to your brain owing to mouth breathing. Our brains function on glucose and oxygen and the less oxygen you drive into your system through what is often poor habitual breathing, the more carbs you crave to keep up with whatever activity you’re involved in, This is most common sat sedentary behind technology at work.
