I’ve helped human beings who adopt a posture like this when scrolling on their mobile or watching TV. They never realised how bad it was for their breathing.
Yes, lying on your left side is perfect for good sleep posture.
But the tendency to breath hold and hyperventilate albeit hidden whilst performing using a phone is extremely common.
I say ‘performing’ because so many people are not relaxed adopting this posture in using technology. They are often in fight, flight or freeze which tells the brain you are performing.
It’s the kind of posture that can affect your sleep even though sleep experts still don’t address this as an underlying cause of dysfunctional sleep or poor restorative sleep. That’s just one effect and there are many other others.
Nothing beats the J shape posture sitting upright looking ahead rather than down at your phone. You have a better chance of avoiding chest breathing by doing this because you are telling your brain you are relaxed rather than in anticipation mode and the subtle anxiety that comes with that.
Keep adopting poor posture and mental symptoms like anxiety can only grow.
Good posture is everything to your sustained good health.
And it’s even more important if your health is in any way compromised.
It might be ok for your cat but not you.
