Unpopular opinion! We need to rethink the phrase “regulate your nervous system.”
The objective is not to hold the nervous system in one ideal state. It is to develop flexibility.
When stress becomes chronic, people tend to get stuck at one end of the spectrum — either over-activated or shut down.
Neither is healthy as a long-term default.
The answer is not to force calm, but to restore movement between states: effort and recovery, tension and release, activation and rest.
That capacity to shift is what builds resilience.
A nervous system does not need perfection. It needs adaptability.
That is the real value of fluctuation.
